4 States At Highest Risk of Flooded Roads
According to First Street Foundation, 23% of all roads in the U.S. are at high risk of flooding (that's almost 2 million miles combined) and becoming untraversable.
With low elevation, proximity to coastal regions, and increased extreme weather instances, drivers in the states below are at much higher risk of experiencing flood damage to their homes and vehicles.
In fact, 85% of the most at-risk counties in the U.S. are in these 4 states alone:
- Florida
- Kentucky
- West Virginia
- Louisiana, with 8 of the top 20 most at-risk counties and the most at-risk county in the U.S., Cameron Parish
If you're a driver in one of the flood zones in those states, some tips for driving on flooded roads include: stay in the center of the road since it's the shallowest, drive slowly in low gear, avoid moving water, dry your brakes, and have IP69 (highest possible) waterproof-rated equipment. Perhaps the most important tip of all? Don't drive at all.
