Fall is my favorite season. Growing up in the midwest it was a welcome break from the heat, bugs, and cold that defined the other seasons. My birthday is in late October, I loved dressing up for halloween, and pumpkin pie is my favorite dessert. I'm getting married in Kansas just as the leaves are changing. also, gourds. Fall is my favorite season.

My parents bought a new (to them) car last November. My mom was very pumped about the included backup and side camera.
"It has grid lines when you back up! The cameras change when I use my turn signal!" She happily exclaimed after she brought it home. When I came back to Kansas for Christmas, she proudly showed me how everything worked.
Many new vehicles now come standard with backup and/or side cameras. It makes sense. Laws are changing, and the new generation are learning to drive with cameras. The question remains, how can I make my parents even safer? After hearing all about my mom's backup...

Oregon's new distracted driving law goes into effect Oct. 1st. House Bill 2597 passed earlier this year, and includes a stricter ban on phone use while driving with higher fines that quickly escalate.
https://youtu.be/rKLhqiuT7Gs
Closing Loopholes
The new law fixes a loophole in a 2009 version, which bans calls/texting, but includes nothing about navigation apps or games. The new version prohibits drives from using ANY phone function that requires holding or touching. You can use the phone to activate a preprogrammed route, but not to type in an address.
As shown below, Oregon is the 22nd state...

I'm going back to Kansas for my cousin's wedding this weekend and I couldn't be more excited. I get to see my entire family and spend one last time in my childhood home before my parents sell it and move to a bigger city. I'm also very pumped for the open road. As I'll be driving a lot on rural roads, here are some tips from the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau on how to share the road with farm equipment.
Safety Tips
- Don't Rush - You'll probably encounter agricultural equipment on rural roads. Give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination.
- Pass With Care - If a farmer has pulled off the road...

While walking to work today I saw a cyclist hit a hidden patch of ice and fall onto the street. I quickly ran over to see if he was ok, and luckily he seemed alright. A bit shaken, but alright. He didn’t have a helmet on, but caught himself on his hands before his head hit the cement. Thankfully no cars were coming. He was riding on a pretty busy street. It got me thinking about safety laws.
“I should be wearing a helmet, but I left it at work and I’m not going very far. I’ll slow down,” he assured me before zipping down Van Brunt St.
Of course, he should wear a helmet. Everyone should wear a helmet...

You can see it all the time, but sometimes you have to pay attention. Someone giving their bus seat to an elderly person. A person letting someone traveling with small children ahead of them at a convenience store. Everyday good. We saw it in Portland, Oregon a few days ago.
Everyday Good In Rare Portland Winter
Portland doesn't usually get a lot of snow. Snow is so rare that, for environmental reasons, they don't use rock salt on roads. A snow storm recently brought 13 inches of snow and somewhat shut down the city. A video from a news helicopter shows a car getting stuck on train tracks in the...

3,179 people were killed, and 431,000 were injured in vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers in 2014. Recently the NHTSA announced their 2nd phase of voluntary guidelines to address distracted driving.
The first phase encouraged automakers to design less distracting devices or systems at the time of manufacture. This second phase encourages...

Transport Canada will require that all new cars and small trucks must be equipped with backup camera systems by May 2018. This safety measure applies to light vehicles including, passenger cars and small trucks, vans and buses.
“This helps children be seen and provides Canadians with one of the best safety technology systems to reduce back-over collisions,” Transport Minister Marc Garneau said in a statement in late October.
“The objective of this proposal is to align the Canadian and United States safety regulations, to provide Canadians with the same level of protection under the law related...
