Operation Ghostrider Cracks Down on Michigan Distracted Driving
Today over 50 law enforcement officers from sheriff's offices, police departments, and the Michigan State Police will begin Operation Ghost Rider. This operation uses unmarked police vehicles to observe distracted drivers, then radio marked vehicles to start a traffic stop.
"Distracted drivers put themselves and everyone else on the road in extreme danger. That text, phone call, or any other behavior taking your focus off your driving, can and should wait," said Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue, director of the Michigan State Police. "We hope this traffic enforcement initiative will help change dangerous driver behavior."
Last year law officers conducted more than 907 traffic stops resulting in 726 citations and 34 arrests with a similar tactic.
According to the Transportation Improvement Association, 72 people were killed and 7,652 were injured in crashes involving a distracted driver. Texting and driving causes 1 in 4 accidents in the United States.
