A new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) shows the effectiveness of advanced driver assistance systems.
According to the one part of the study, not accounting for driver demographics, stated that lane departure warning cut the fatal crash rate 86 percent. In another analysis of the study that accounted for driver demographics, the rate of all crashes was 18 percent lower for vehicles equipped with lane departure.
"This is the first evidence that lane departure warning is working to prevent crashes of passenger vehicles on U.S. roads," Jessica Cicchino, IIHS vice president...

We have seen some interesting vehicle patents lately. Remember the Google Waymo "flypaper" to prevent secondary impact? Last week the company patented tech that would allow a vehicle to soften in the event of a collision with a pedestrian. Now Toyota is getting into the mix with a transparent A-pillar patent.
Safety Tech
Traditionally A-Pillars create interfere with views during tight turns, a dangerous problem addressed in the patent, "Apparatuses and Methods for making an Object Appear Transparent." The technology uses mirrors to bend the image around the pillar. Read more here. This technology...

Are you going to watch the solar eclipse on August 21st? It's estimated that 7.5 million people throughout the United States will travel up to 60 miles to experience the event. This will definitely affect traffic for everyone, including truckers. Here are some useful tips.
- With many hotels, motels and campgrounds in the path of 100 percent eclipse totality booked for months, consider other nearby locations. A travel agent or online travel booking resource can help you locate a hotel with vacancy.
- “Pack your patience” and plan for congestion on roads, especially as you get closer to locations...

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our webinar on the dangers of drowsy driving yesterday. Missed it? Don’t worry, you can watch it below.
Drowsy Driving
Drowsy driving is a major problem. According to the CDC, an estimated 1 in 25 adult drivers (18 years or older) report falling asleep while driving in the previous 30 days.
The National Safety Council concludes that 43% of Americans admit they don’t get enough sleep to mitigate safety risks at work and on the road.

I have good news and bad news. First the good news. According to a new report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, about 91% of adults always use seat belts in the front seat. Now here's the bad news. Only 72% of adults use seat belts when they are in the back of a car.
"For most adults, it's still as safe to ride in the back seat as the front seat, but not if you aren't buckled up," says Jessica Jermakian, an IIHS senior research engineer and a co-author of the study. "That applies to riding in an Uber, Lyft or other hired vehicle, too."
Oh, it's Safer?
Why the drop? The most common...

A few days ago I saw the aftermath of a major accident right outside of Rear View Safety's main office in Brooklyn. A car hit a cyclist who was riding across Atlantic, a busy street.
There was a large crowd of people and emergency vehicles all around. I asked the crowd what had happened. The cyclist wasn't wearing a helmet and had run a red light and was struck by an SUV. I watched the paramedics place him on a stretcher and drive away. I read later that he died from the injuries.
Who Is To Blame?
The fault lies on the cyclist. He ran a light, and paid the ultimate price for it. However, the...

U.S. Representatives Tim Ryan (D-13th OH), Peter King (R-2nd NY) and Jan Schakowsky (D-9th IL) recently introduced the Helping Overcome Trauma for Children Alone in Rear Seats Act (HOT CARS Act of 2017, H.R. 2801). The act requires technology in passenger vehicles to alert the driver when a passenger is left in the back seat.
This bipartisan initiative would prevent deaths and injuries caused by vehicular heatstroke. It is the first step to prevent this horrible problem. Reminder systems for headlights, doors, keys and seat belts already exist in many cars.
According to Kids and Cars, this year...

More and more large companies and lawmakers are taking distracted driving seriously. It's about time. According to NHTSA, distracted driving killed 3,477 people in 2015. A feature in Apple's iOS11 hopes to stop this trend.
The Do Not Disturb While Driving feature disables alerts when you're on the road. The feature pops up when the phone determines you're in a moving vehicle after you've used it once. You can dismiss the feature if you're just a passenger.
Your phone will auto reply to messages that you're driving. There is an option to over ride this feature in the case of an "urgent" message...

Kelly, my fiance, and I got rid of our cars shortly after we moved to New York. I really miss driving everyday. One of my brothers also lives in the city and we trade babysitting for occasionally using his car for groceries or for a weekend trip to the beach. It's a great trade. Recently he took a road trip with his family to Ohio. He took it into his local shop to get checked out before the trip. It's an old but reliable car, so he wanted to make sure everything was alright before the long drive. His car was fine, but he left the shop with peace of mind.

I think it's safe to say that most of us have driven a little over the speed limit at some point in our lives. In my younger, dumber years, I know I have. I have the tickets and upset parents to prove it. But how often do you hear of a police chief issuing himself a speeding ticket? That's what happened last week in Oklahoma.
Sperry, Oklahoma Police Chief Justin Burch issued himself a $300 ticket after a dash cam video showed him driving 80 mph in a 50 mph zone. He held himself accountable and apologized on the department's Facebook page.
