For many the holiday season is about spending time with family and friends. Personally I'm very excited to get out of New York for a little while and see my family back in Kansas.  I'm not the only on traveling for Christmas. Around 63.9 million Americans will travel over 50 miles from home during the Christmas holiday travel period. While i'll be traveling by plane, more than 52.4 million Americans (82% of ALL holiday travelers) intend to travel by automobile. Here are some tips for safe travel.

I'm heading to my brother and sister-in-law's apartment in Red Hook, Brooklyn for a small Thanksgiving meal. I look forward to spending the day cooking, eating, and playing games. "#Stoponred" is the theme of this years National School Bus Safety Week, October 16-20. The theme was chosen from the winner of a safety poster the year before.

A California state law effective July 2018 will require drivers and passengers of commercial buses, such as Greyhound, to wear seat belts. The law includes a $20 fine for the first violation and a $50 fine for the next. Parents are held responsible for making sure children under 16 are buckled up. The companies of charter buses are also responsible for children using seat belts.

Oregon's new distracted driving law goes into effect Oct. 1st. House Bill 2597 passed earlier this year, and includes a stricter ban on phone use while driving with higher fines that quickly escalate.

Closing Loopholes

The new law fixes a loophole in a 2009 version, which bans calls/texting, but includes nothing about navigation apps or games. The new version prohibits drives from using ANY phone function that requires holding or touching. You can use the phone to activate a preprogrammed route, but not to type in an address.
